Tue 3rd:

Andrew is much better off in a familiar environment. He still says he is confused and at times he is worried about what has happened to him ( well, wouldn't you be). He does ask the same questions over and over again, particularly what the day is and what has happened to him.

He now has a watch with a date on it ( thank you Malcolm) and I have also pinned a note to his sleeve saying "Todays date is .................2009" which I am changing each day ( this has only been going on for 2 days) but I'm not sure whether this is helping or not as he keeps asking me if its true - after all you wouldn't normally have the date pinned to your sleeve would you?

Several calendars have arrived; I am planning on putting one in each room. Thank you very much to all donators of spare calendars!

He is not sure whether he is dreaming or whether things are real. This is quite difficult because what has happened to him is quite hard to believe and he can't remember much of the time he was in hospital and the short term memory is not too good so altogether it's not surprising he's confused.

On the plus side he does enjoy playing music and it does provide a diversion from trying to work things out; and visitors also provide a diversion.

Eusebio and edelweiss have disappeared. Disliking for oranges, cucumber and most other salad has returned, so this is quite good.

Yesterday evening we had a very difficult moment when he refused to take his "simvastatin" pill on the grounds that "he had an idea that it was doing him harm". Extensive questioning did not reveal much more about what this harm might be, and in desperation I phoned the GP out of hours and was advised to avoid confrontation as stopping taking it for a few days would not cause any harm. We go to the GP on Thursday. Tonight he took the pill without questionning. He says his legs feel heavy and he walks as if they are, though he is able to walk quite long distances and yesterday probably did a mile and a half.

Andrew is definitely at his best between about 10 and late afternoon. Evenings are not so good - when he is getting tired all the doubts about things being real or not start to come out. I made the mistake of suggesting that we watch Wallace and Gromit "curse of the were -rabbit", which was a huge mistake, as it is quite surreal and involves concepts of thought transference. Visitors, I think it would be an idea to avoid surreal stuff, if possible!

On the whole though, he is a lot better now he is home

Love to you all
Gill

  1. I also have a calendar (a gift from the nice people who Stomp played for on Sunday). I was thinking of posting it, but as you have so many already I'll drop it in at the weekend.
