Thurs 9th April:
We made it to the Royal Free this morning with plenty of time to spare. I was very nervous because it was the first time we were going to use the train & tube and I needed to get Andrew up earlier than he is used to, which I thought might be a problem because last time I did this, he insisted on going back to bed at 11am. I planned everything the night before and it went OK.
He has had a blood test for Fabry's disease, a rare condition in which an enzyme which regulates cell chemistry is too low. It is recommended that men under 65 with unexplained stroke, particularly in the brain stem area, are tested for this. We will know the results in a couple of weeks. If he does have it, he will need fortnightly intravenous treatment with the enzyme, which can be done at home. So we will just wait and see - it is rare after all - so rare that no other patients turned up in the unit, the whole time that we were there.
Love to you all
Gill
