We visited Harefield today. Andrew did his very best to get up early as we had to be there by 9.20, indeed you would think I was the one with memory problems as I forgot to take my bag containing purse etc, glasses, etc! Luckily the only negative effect of this was a warning letter about clamping on the car as I hadn't paid at the pay-and-display - no actual clamp, possibly because the receptionist said she would write a note for the car park attendant.
Andrew is likely to be offered an appointment for closure of the hole in his heart (the PFO) on 4th August, or failing that, 1st September. It is a one-day procedure, so no overnight stay. The consultant was quite brisk ( mainly because he was running very late, having no registrar) and said that it was "like closing the stable door", but it would stop another stroke. It is unlikely to affect his tiredness, which I had sort of convinced myself might be the case.
On the way back Andrew started to tell me which way to turn at junctions, which I took as a very good sign, as there were at least 4 hours between the journey there and the journey back and that last time we made the journey was nearly 3 months ago. His visual memory is quite good, and I think non-visual memories are starting to stick a bit more easily.
Also, today he said that he could remember having the stroke and that it was as if there was something in his mouth that stopped him talking. He has never been able to remember anything about it before. He now knows the story of his stroke, because I go through it every day at some point, and when I start it he can finish it, but I have never used those words or talked about it from that perspective ( how could I?).
On non-medical matters, he played a really good short set with John Howarth and Paul King on Sunday at a fundraiser at Aspley Guise. When he is on stage it really is as if nothing has happened. ( However, the back stage hunt for the guitar case was another matter... and I think my skills as a roadie leave a little to be desired)
A pic of the gig is at the top of the blog
If you are at the World Picnic in Cambell Park in Milton Keynes on 2nd August, he will be on about 6-ish, they lead the way into the final number
If you want tickets for the Soulbury Millenium Green gig on 5th September, they are £15 including food, more details to follow
Don't forget the L&D stroke ward fundraiser on 3rd October, tickets are £8 if you book early, from me.
